Have you ever imagining how would it feel to live in a world where making a sound is considered to be a suicide method? If not, A Quiet Placewould be the horror movie that successfully portray the lives of people who need to survive in a world of quietness. With a high rating of 95% in Rotten Tomatoes, A Quiet Placeis ranked to be the best horror movie of 2018. Directed by John Krasinski, the movie takes place eighty-nine days after an alien species almost wiped out human existence. The movie surrounds the daily lives of the Abbott family and how they managed to survive in a world filled with foul creatures. A Quiet Place successfully portrays its complex theme of love, family, and connection.
Horror stories have existed for a very long time as a source of entertainment for the real-life audience. However, besides from just being a source of entertainment, horror story can have a deeper meaning in which the creator is trying to portray. For instance, horror story can be used to emphasize on a real-world situation or to reflect upon a cultural belief. A Quiet Place is no different from other horror movies in a sense that it also stresses a current situation in our society. Throughout the movie, Krasinski is trying to emphasize on the relationship between parents and their children in today’s society by using aliens as a symbolism for danger and risk. Krasinski is criticizing on the way that parents are treating their children these days. Parents are being overly protected due to potential risks and danger that their children might face. Parents failed to let their children explore the world on their own. Furthermore, children in today’s culture failed to face challenges and struggles on their own because they are afraid of everything including the fear of failing. Krasinski is trying to portray how the silent environment in the movie also reflect on the world today. There are some people who cannot speak their mind because they are avoiding the danger from the angry public. There are voices that go unheard because of oppression from people in power. The monsters are a metaphor for people in control, the sound can be seen as people’s voice, and the Abbott family symbolize people who needed to endure oppression from the society.

Although, A Quiet Place is one of the greatest and scariest horror movies of 2018, yet, I do not like how John Krasinski failed to explain the origin of these blind and invulnerable aliens. The movie did not include a backstory on the creation of these monsters and why they are trying to wipe out all of existence. Furthermore, I want to know whether or not other people, besides the Abbott family, are still out there. As a result, I will try to include these missing details within my adaptation of A Quiet Place. After watching A Quiet Placemultiple times, my adaptation will still focus on the Abbott family and how they manage to adapt and survive in a post-apocalyptic world. Besides the character in the story, everything else ranging from the setting to the plot will be very different from the original story. A Quiet Placetakes place in a small farm near an isolated town, therefore, it is not very relatable to most of the audience in today’s society who lived in huge cities. As a result, my adaptation will take place a relatively big cities with skyscrapers and big houses. The time period of my adaptation will probably be around the time of the 2015 where there are many controversies surrounding climate change and its effects globally. Unlike the reality, my adaptation will exaggerate on the impact of climate change on human’s health. In my adaptation, climate change will cause a certain kind of bacteria to grow uncontrollably. As scientist, Lee Abbott and his wife, Evelyn Abbott, managed to figure out what is happening when one of their children die from a trip to an isolated island in Greenland. The family then went back to their home in the United States and published their research on this new species of bacteria. However, the public believes it to be fake news, so they try to silent the couple’s opinion. As a consequence, the bacteria start to spread rapidly and most of the human race were infected by the bacteria which turned them into these creatures that are slower, uglier, and more resistance than human. The Abbott family need to survive through implementing many survival strategies. The creatures in this adaptation will be a symbolism for people in today’s culture who are ignorant of the existence of climate change and people in control who tried to oppress others. I will continue to use some of the scenes from A Quiet Place in my adaptation which is the scene where Lee Abbott sacrifices himself in order to save his lovely children, Regan and Marcus. Besides the Abbott family, there are also other people who survive and are immune to the bacteria. The themes of my adaptation are survival, love, jealously, and family. After reading my adaptation, I hope the audience could somewhat change their perspective on different issues in real life such as climate change, technology usage, etc.
