With a rating of 95% in Rotten Tomatoes, A Quiet Placeis ranked to be the best horror movie of 2018. The horror movie talks about a family of four living in a post-apocalyptic world surrounded by monsters. Although, I really like the way John Krasinski portrays each of his characters and his uses for sound, yet, he did not clearly describe the monsters – the main reason why the world is like this. Therefore, in my adaptation, I would like to focus on why the world was destroy and what destroy it. In my adaptation, I will explore the impact of climate change on the ecosystem and human’s health. I would like to explore the controversies regarding the impact of climate change. In today society, many people still do not believe in the fact that climate change exist while some think that climate change will not be a problem for them. Yet, climate change impact everyone on the global scale by causing changes in the temperature, ecosystem, and human’s health. Furthermore, I would also like to explore more about family and relationship between parents and their kids. In the modern society, parents tend to be over-cautious and over-protected because they afraid that their kids would be in harm if they don’t. Although, parents protecting their kids is normal, yet, cuddling them will make them weaker because they cannot do anything by themselves. Unlike A Quiet Place, the primary focuses of my adaptation will be family and climate change.

“A Quiet Place’ is a Metaphor for the Modern, Anxious Family”
This article focuses on how A Quiet Placesuccessfully reflects the pressure and fear of being a parent and raising children in the modern society. Since parents are always concerned about their children’s safety, they tend to be over-protected. As a result, children do not have the opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge from exploring the world around them. Lastly, the article also portrays how children are avoiding trying new things on their own because of the constant fear of being a failure:
It is a stressful time to be a parent. In the past twenty years, parents have been raising children in the era of mass school shootings, 9/11 and the war on terrorism, a financial crisis that led to the global recession, and other domestic and world events that note how much the world has changed since they were children. The message bombarding adults is “the world is not a safe place”. (Hetterly)
In my adaptation, I will use the information regarding parenting skills and children’s behaviors to describe the relationship between parents and their children. Parents are willing to do anything within their abilities to protect their children from harm. Furthermore, I will exploit the idea that when parents are over-protected, they are robbing away the chance for their children to development and grow into a tougher character.
“Characters / A Quiet Place”
This website analyzes all of the characters and their traits within A Quiet Placeranging from the monsters to Beau Abbott, who died in the beginning of the movie. Each character has their own unique role within a movie that helped them to stand out from the rest of the characters. For example, Evelyn Abbott, the mother in the movie, symbolizes a “She will fight to her last breath to protect her children. Her one goal in life is to make certain they're safe” (A Quiet Place / Characters). Although I will be adapting A Quiet Place, yet, I am still using most of the characters from the film in my adaptation. This source will help me to understand more about each character and their role within the story overall. I will also be using some of the source materials on monsters to have a better idea of what my monsters might look like and how they are going to affect other characters within the story.
“Let’s Talk About the Nail Scene in A Quiet Place”
The article successfully describes the importance of sound and its impact on every scenes of the movie. In the entire movie, the audience get to quietness and whenever the sound is intensifying, the audience will expect something big to happen. As a result, this website analyzes one of the most important scenes within the movie which emphasizes on women’s power and resilience:
With her husband and children out of the house, Evelyn’s water breaks. She instinctively heads for the AV command center in the basement of the house to fire up the SOS signal, and on her way down the old wooden stairs, Blunt’s character lands with the full weight of her step on an upright nail. Everyone in A Quiet Place goes shoeless to mitigate noise, meaning the spike instantly buries itself several inches into Evelyn’s exposed foot. Evelyn does eventually escape the basement, and hobbles her way to a bathroom upstairs, presumably while a baby is crowning. (Crucchiola)
This scene is very significant and powerful in which it can be shown separately from the movie and still portray the same message to the audience. In my adaptation, there will be a scene or two where a woman will overcome an obstacle without the help of anyone. Furthermore, my adaptation will also surround family bond, so I would emphasize on how a mother is willing to go through so much pain to provide a better and safer environment for her kid.
“About half of Americans don’t think climate change will affect them — here’s why”
The article successfully reveals that many people still do not entirely believe in climate change and that many of them think that climate change will not affect them. The article further provides information on how climate change has already impacted the ecosystem and human’s health:
But temperatures are going up everywhere, not just in the Arctic; cities are especially hard-hit and heat waves are becoming more frequent. Extreme weather events — like wildfires and hurricanes — are also becoming more extreme. These changes are consistent with a warming world. That sort of makes sense: though the Gallup poll found that while only 64 percent of Americans think that global warming is caused by human activities. (Potenza)
This source informs my adaptation about what the majority of the population think of climate change. In my adaptation, climate change is the main cause of disease outbreak which will affected most of the population, therefore, it is very important for me to analyzes the negative impacts of global climate change. Furthermore, my adaptation will also emphasize on the fact that most people don’t believe in climate change which make the diseases outbreak harder to prevent.
“Microbial growth in the polar oceans--role of temperature and potential impact of climate change” *
The academic journal provides a solid research on the relationship what impact bacterial growth in the Arctic region, where the temperature is quite low compared to other regions. The researchers compare the growth rate of bacteria in different regions with different temperature. Therefore, they came up with a solid result which linked temperature changes to bacterial growth. According to Kirkman, David, and their fellow researchers:
In the low temperature range of -1.8 - 4 oC in the Arctic Ocean and the Ross Sea, bacterial production to primary production ratios vary greatly. These two cold systems have the lowest average bacterial production to primary production ratios, but several values are as high, or higher, than estimated for the warmer oceans. Bacterial production was also higher, as were ratios of bacterial production, bringing these values closer to those observed in lower-latitude oceans. (4)
This academic journal solidifies my understanding on the impact of global climate change on bacterial growth. Since there would be a disease outbreak caused by bacteria in my adaptation, I would depend on the information in this journal to make my fiction more believable. As global temperature increases, the bacterial growth rate will also increase especially in polar regions.
“Corporeality, musical heartbeats, and cinematic emotion” *
This academic journal provides a solid relationship between music and fear in films. Over the course of the journal, the author claims that music is another instrument that can me manipulate in order to provoke fear in audience. People tend to connect a specific emotion when each sound is played in a film. As Ben Winters stated it:
Film music's emotive power--in particular its ability seemingly to engender a state of suspense or even 'fear' when watching a horror movie--is well known and is both recognized by spectators and exploited by filmmakers. We know, for instance, that turning down the volume may serve to alleviate some of the emotional symptoms experienced when watching a film on television. (1)
In my adaptation, I will try to manipulate sound in order to build suspense when something bad is about to happen. Furthermore, I can use silent, like A Quiet Place, to create an uncomfortable and uncanny atmosphere. Sound could also play a major role to express someone’s emotions within my adaptation.
