Lee Abbott turns the door knobs carefully, takes a peek inside the dark room, and tiptoes his way across the room slowly. He stops at one side of the bed and smiles upon looking at his three little angels who were sound asleep. He leans down toward them and kisses each one goodnight on the forehead gently to avoid waking them up. As Lee makes his way out of the room, he reaches in and turns off the light in the bathroom. He breathes out in relieve and walks across the hall toward his room where Evelyn is folding their clothes and organizing them inside of the luggage. Without taking her eyes off the big pile of clothes,
Evelyn asks, “Did you kisses them goodnight?”
“One by one” Lee smirks.
Catching her by surprise, Lee hugs his wife from behind and tells her how he can’t wait to see Beau’s expression when he sees the “unicorn whale” for the first time. Around an hour later, Lee yawns as he finishes up putting his binocular, drones, and audio record into his suitcase. Evelyn has just also finishes folding and organizing their clothes. Around two am, they are suddenly startle by the noise of someone knocking on the door. Lee looks at his wife and raises his arm signaling her to stay behind him. He then approaches the door slowly, turns the knob and peeks through the small opening. He swings the door opens and kneels down as he sees Beau – his youngest child – yawning and rubbing his bright blue eyes.
“Did we accidentally wake you up Beau?” Lee asks,
Beau shakes his head and cries, “I don’t wan…….ttttt to go dad. I’mmmmmm scared!”
His dad knows that this is not Beau first time resisting on going because he is afraid of the plane and worried that he might get lost in Greenland. However, like every other time, Lee rubs his Beau’s head gently and tells him that everything will be just fine. Lee affirms that he will never take his eyes off Beau that he will always be there to protect him no matter what. Furthermore, Beau will get to see many unique and beautiful creatures ranging from the narwhals to arctic hares. After a moment of thinking to himself, Beau finally agrees to go and decides to go back to sleep. As Beau starts to head back, Lee looks as his wife who is standing over him and nods his head. He then reaches out for Beau and lifts him up carefully from the ground.
“Would you like to sleep with us for the night?” Lee says.
Beau happily hugs his dad around the neck and says, “You are the best!”
Still holding his son around his waist, Lee makes his way to his bed, tugs Beau in the middle and lies down next to him. Evelyn switches off the bed light and falls asleep.
Still half-asleep, Regan opens her eyes, yawns, and sits up when her two-little brother, Beau and Marcus, shake her leg back and forth. Regan looks as Marcus as he signals her that their mom is calling from downstairs and it’s time to get ready. Regan looks at the clock on the wall and realizes that it is only seven in the morning. While her two little brothers are in the bathroom cleaning and preparing themselves, Regan starts folding the blanket and straightens the bed. When it is her turn, Regan makes her way to the bathroom, closes the door, and takes a bath. After drying and combing her hair, Regan carefully put on her new pair of sound amplifiers that her dad just got for her birthday last weekend.
About five minutes later, at 7:30, Evelyn yells, “Boys, tell your sister breakfast is ready. And you too come down quickly or else we will miss the flight. Regan, Marcus, and Beau wake up upon hearing their mom calls from downstairs. “Breakfast is ready! Remember to bring your backpack and sleeping bag.” Downstairs, Lee skims through the channels with the remote and stops at channel 65, which is CCN – Climate Change News – and cranks the volume to almost 80. He then walks over to the kitchen where his wife and kids are already waiting for him.
As the cab arrives in front of house, Marcus and Beau eagerly run out and buckle themselves on the backseat. Simultaneously, Lee runs back and forth to grab all of their luggage and backpacks. On the other hand, Regan and her mom make their way throughout the house to turn off all of the light and see whether they forget something. Evelyn closes the main door, puts the keychain in her handbags, and goes down the front porch. After an hour of driving through the endless path between the forest, the cab finally arrives in front of Terminal 3 of the O’Hare International Airport.
After finished checking in their luggage, the Abbott family walk to gate 87 and wait for their turn to board the plane. Having the privilege to sit at the window seat, Beau gazes at each aircraft that passes by him and observes in joyful as they take-off and land. After a moment of waiting, the male flight attendant thanks everyone for waiting and he instructs them to put everything away to prepare for take-off. As the plane speeds through the pathway, Beau nervously grabs his brother and father hand tightly. He closes one eye, clenches his fists and prays. A few moment later, he takes a deep breath, opens his eyes, and realizes that everything is okay. Unlike her youngest brother, Regan removes her amplifiers and remains calm. She holds her mother hand and starts to focus on her breathing, which according to the doctor should help with her concentration. While his family was asleep, Marcus stays up the whole six hours flight and giggles to himself as he watches the new “Amazing Spider 5” and “Iron-Man 4”.
At nine that night, the Abbott family finally arrived at the hotel where they would rent only a room for one night only. Before they start unpacking and changing, Evelyn and her husband gather their children to the side of the bed. She then dances with her hands elegantly as she tries to tell her children about the rules, they expected their children to follow. She emphasizes on safety and gestures that they need to be supervised at all time or else someone will get into trouble. As the oldest child, Regan nods her head continuously and motions that she will take care of the boys. After spending a night in a hotel near the river, the Abbott family wakes up early and walks down the path leading to the port. After a hole ten minutes of searching, they finally found a fisherman that agrees to lend them his boat for a week. Lee hands the man 500 bucks and thanks him for trusting them. They then embarked on a two hours long journey across Greenland Sea to a remote island that some fisherman has warn them of potential danger.
Walking through a thick and uninhabited forest for hours, the kids start to whine and whine. On the other hand, Lee motivates his children by telling them that they are very close to the perfect camping site. After endless hours of walking nonstop, they finally arrive in a middle of forest, near the pond. They start to settle down, prepare food, unpack clothes, and building fire. Every morning for the next six days, Lee would wake everyone up to see the sunrise above the mountain range, he then takes them to different spot where they have to spend hours sitting and waiting patiently for the endemic animals to appear such as arctic wolves, arctic foxes, etc.
Despite his dad warning to not go anywhere near the boiling pond from the last two days, Beau curiosity leads him straight to the direction of the pond as he chases an arctic hare. When he realizes that the he had lost the arctic hare, he looks up to realize that the boiling pond is in front of him. He was about to run back to his parents’ tent but then he sees a baby seal lying to the pond. Beau thinks to himself that it would be alright if he just takes one quick look. He slowly tiptoeing in the direction of the baby seal, but strangely, it did not move or reacts. Beau then gets a little closer, kneels down and rolls the baby seal over just to realize it was already dead. The seal has started to rot and smell. Flies and maggots have already eaten most the baby seal from inside out and they are dripping all over the place. Beau runs back to his mom as quickly as possible and tells her everything that had happened. Evelynlifts up her shirt and wipes off Beau’s tear.
Three days after the Abbott family got back from Greenland, Evelyn and Lee start to notice that Beau has been acting very strange. He has been waking up around two a.m. sweeting from having nightmares. No matter how hard Lee tries to ask, Beau refuses to tell his dad what he sees in his nightmare. On the fifth day from their trip, Evelyn and Lee suddenly wake up from someone’s yelling and immediately run to their kids’ room. Beau is screaming and kicking as he holds on to his aching head. Evelyn puts her arm on Beau forehead just to realize that he is burning up. Evelyn gives Beau painkiller and ibuprofen to ease his pain and drop his temperature. They sit their watching Beau falls back asleep until the morning while Regan and Marcus sleep in their parents’ room. On the next morning, Beau looks very pale and begins to vomit yellowish bile. Lee carries him to the closest clinic, but Beau’s condition only worsens. His throat begins to swell up which block his breathing pattern. After trying their best to figure out what is happening, the doctor walks out of the emergency room to informs that Beau doesn’t have long. Upon his final moment, Beau holds on to his mother’s and father’s hand to tell them how much he loves them. He says that he will be okay and that they should not be too worried for him. Evelyn bursts out and hugs her child for one last time. Moment later, Beau heart rates drop to zero as he exhales for one last time.
After Beau’s funeral, Lee blames himself for killing his children by taking them on the journey to the remote island. Evelyn turns to her husband and asks:
“Who are we if we can’t protect them?”
Over the next few days, Lee and Evelyn dedicates all of their time and energy to look more closely at the mysterious cause of their child death. They began to analyze the sample of the water they previously took from the pond. Lee uses a microscope and notice a strange bacterium that eats other species of bacterium. He discusses his finding with his wife, and they start to test it in mice. They mice that are infected start to become more aggressive as they start to attack and kill other unaffected mice. They immediately publish their research and send it to the “Climate Change News” channel. After days of waiting, the Climate Change News contact the government about the issue. Days later, the FBI arrives and confiscates all of their research and work on this species. The government then warns them not to go around and spreading this unreliable new or else their family will face big consequences.
Evelyn asks, “Did you kisses them goodnight?”
“One by one” Lee smirks.
Catching her by surprise, Lee hugs his wife from behind and tells her how he can’t wait to see Beau’s expression when he sees the “unicorn whale” for the first time. Lee gazes at the calendar on the wall for a while before crossing off July 9, 2016, exactly 100 days after the death of his youngest angels. He falls down into the sofa, puts his hands on his forehead, and checks the radio. Lee stares at a ceiling for another hour and contemplates on the thought that he could have saved his son. Lee still struggles to sleep each night blaming himself for being a bad parent. Marcus, from downstairs, walks up slowly and tells his dad that dinner will be ready in an hour. After Marcus goes back downstairs to help out his mom and her friend, Marry, with setting up dinner. Lee stands up slowly, walks over to the window, and lifts up a piece of newspaper, which titled “Massive Bacteria Outbreak”, that is covering the window and takes a peek outside. Lee then slowly opens the door to the balcony, bends down behind the metal bars, and observes his surrounding with a binocular. He keeps on watching with his binocular for any sign of the “Oher”.
A few moment later, he walks slowly downstairs and informs everyone that they are safe hear for the night. He looks at his neighbors, Tom, Shane, Rick, Glenn, and Daryl, and tells them that tomorrow they’ll go to get more supply in the city. While the moms are cooking and the dads are planning at the dining table, the kids are playing board games in silent in the living room. They all reminded each other to be absolutely quiet. Spreading the Chicago maps across the dining table, they point to a small area, which hasn’t been marked with a red dot, and agree that they will raid there tomorrow. After eating dinner in silent, everyone makes their way back to their room, except for Lee. He goes over the kids’ room and bends down before Marcus says,
“I would like you guys to come with me on the trip tomorrow. You need to start learning on how to take care of this family and yourself.”
“But who are going to look after mom and the kids, dad?” asks Marcus nervously.
Regan suddenly rises from her bed and signals that she wants to go on the trip with him too. However, Lee disagrees and tells her that she needs to stay at home to take care of the kids and help mom with house choir. He then stands up and leaves the room slowly.
Around four in the next morning, Lee and Marcus make their way downstairs and outside to the van. Lee checks his bag for necessities and runs inside to get his shotgun. Lee informs his son that all adults need to carry a gun while going outside of the house. Tom starts off the engine and begins driving north to their destination. On their way to the central hospital, the group encounters a couple of Oher and manage to kill all of them. Before getting infected by the climate change bacteria, Oher are ordinary human beings. However, after someone shows symptoms of getting infected, they will start to develop a thick layer of impenetrable skin around their body, which make killing one of these creatures very hard. Therefore, Lee tells his son that they only way to kill these creatures is to aim straight for their eyes, which are not covered with the scale.
Approximately one hour later, the van stops in front of the hospital and everyone has five hours to raid as much things as possible. Lee and Marcus go into the nearest supermarket to load all of the edible canned food into the bag. They also grab as much medicine and hygiene equipment as possible. On their way out to the van to unload all of their stuffs, Lee and Marcus jumps as they heard the alarm from the hospital goes off. Someone must have accidentally triggered the old alarm from the hospital. From all direction, the Ohers start running toward the noise. Everyone accelerates toward the van as Tom starts the engine. A few moment later, Shane and Bob are still missing, and everyone knows that they will have to leave. Tom pushes on the petal slowly and the van rolls slowly across the street. The van keeps on gaining speed every second and suddenly Shane yells from behind the car,
“Wait for us! Wait! Wait!”
The Ohers are right behind Shane and Bob as they try to catch up with the van. Shane manages to grab Lee hand who is still reaching for Bob. Lee is so close to grabbing Bob, but all of the sudden, Bob trips and falls. As the van leaves him, everyone can still hear his screaming echoes throughout the ghost town. More and more Ohers are running after the van and they don’t seem to get tired.
Lee looks at Marcus, who is very terrified from what he just witnessed, and rubs his head. He leans in and tells Marcus that in this world, sometimes, we need to make really tough decision like leaving someone behind. Even after two hours of speeding through the forest, the herd of Ohers still manage to stay not so far behind.
When the men arrive at the front porch, they quickly wake their family members up and tell them to grab as much tools and necessities as possible. Everything is chaos, women running up and down, men carrying things, and kids crying everywhere. After that, everyone makes their way across the grass field safer area. However, the noise of kids crying attract the Oher toward them. Finally, they manage to go to the sewer next to their house, which lead them to an unknown destination.
Looking around at everyone, Lee Abbott realizes that he has to stay back in order for everyone to live. He understands that he is the only person who can protect his lovely family. Before his family starts making their way down the sewer, Lee hugs his wife and whispers,
“It’s okay! I have to protect you and them. Compare to me, you will need to endure even more, my pain will end in an instant.”
Then he turns to his two angels and gestures them to stick together and always listen to their mother. He further tells them how much he loves them and how much he wants to be with them. When they hear the sound of the herd approaching, everyone starts making their way down into the sewer. Lee quickly closes the cover, wraps two layers of chains around the locks, and grabs his gun. With Lee’s heroic sacrifice, the Abbott and their neighbors manage to find a new promising community at the end of the tunnel.
